On the Pleasure of Slow Reading

Essay February 18, 2026  ·  4 min read

There is a particular kind of afternoon — grey, unhurried — that seems designed for reading at a pace the internet has nearly forgotten how to accommodate. No notifications. No progress bar. Just ink and eye and the slow metabolism of ideas.

The problem with skimming

We have been taught, implicitly, that efficiency is the primary virtue of reading. Speed-reading courses, highlight features, AI summaries — all carry the same premise: the text is an obstacle between you and its content.

"A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us." — Kafka

But some books resist summary the way a piece of music resists paraphrase. You cannot tell someone what Beethoven's seventh means without playing it. You cannot summarize certain sentences without simply rewriting them, slightly worse.

Slow reading is not a technique. It is an ethic — a decision to treat another person's carefully arranged words with the attention they were written under.
